Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Do I need to have riding experience to join the team?
A. No, the Cal Equestrian Team is a member of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA), which allows individuals of all levels of experience to compete. We have members who have never ridden a horse in addition to those who have competed nationally.
Q. Do I need to have a horse to join the team?
A. No, owning a horse is not required to join the team. Lesson horses will be provided.
Q. Do I need to compete to be on the team?
A. We are currently working towards making a social team happen! Social team members are able to attend team socials and help out at horse shows, team clinics, and educational events. Social team dues are $50/semester.
Q. How many times a week does the team go out to barn?
A. Every team member takes a lesson once a week.
Q. How does the team get out to the barn?
A. The team operates on a carpool system. Team members with cars that opt to be team drivers transport the rest of the team to lessons, shows, and team events, and in turn get reduced club dues.
Q. How much does it cost to be a member?
A. Because we are not funded by the school, every team member must pay team dues. Dues vary every semester based on how many lessons we take and how much the club is able to cover using the money earned from our fundraising efforts and that provided by our generous donors.
